Should You Build a Casino in Your Community?

A casino is a place where a variety of games of chance are played and where gambling is the primary activity. Many casinos offer other amenities besides gambling such as restaurants, free drinks and stage shows. Some casinos have become famous for their architecture, fountains and/or location. For example, the Bellagio in Las Vegas is known for its spectacular fountain show and the hotel rooms it offers. The Casino de Monte-Carlo, the Casino Lisboa and the Casino Baden-Baden are also well-known casinos.

A large portion of the revenue from casinos is gained from the casino’s edge over the bets placed by its patrons. The casino edge can be less than two percent for some games, but this small advantage is enough to allow casinos to make huge profits. In addition to this, most casinos are heavily invested in technology to prevent cheating and theft by their patrons. This includes the use of video cameras, chip tracking systems where bets are electronically monitored minute by minute and roulette wheels that are electronically monitored to discover any statistical deviation.

Many communities that build casinos find that they increase the local economy by creating new employment opportunities for citizens. Moreover, casinos tend to draw tourists that spend money in the community, which stimulates growth in other businesses such as hotels and restaurants. However, when considering whether or not to build a casino in an area, it is important to examine whether the labor force that will work in the casino is coming from the area. If the labor is coming from outside the community, the unemployment rate for the original population will remain unchanged.
